RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi Arabia says two police officers have been shot and killed in the country’s east.
The state-run Saudi Press Agency says the shooting happened around 1 a.m. on Wednesday in the predominantly Shiite eastern region of al-Qatif.
The report, quoting an unnamed Interior Ministry spokesman, says the officers were shot while on patrol near farm fields and that an investigation is underway. Semi-official Saudi media reported earlier that the two officers were shot at a checkpoint in the area, something the Saudi Press Agency did not immediately say.
The shooting comes as the kingdom has faced a series of attacks by Islamic State-inspired militants.
In October, a previously unheard-of Islamic State affiliate claimed an attack in the al-Qatif region targeting a Shiite mosque that killed five people and wounded nine.
